About…

This site is about sharing experiences, information and ideally to make it easier for fellow cyclists to visit Japan and get the most from a bike trip to Japan. It isn’t going to be much help to locals, and if you live and ride in Japan then plenty here will be obvious.

“Tour de Japan”? Well it evokes touring and cycling and all the other good website names were taken. I’ll start with a set of “Japan Cycling 101” pieces that cover the basics like the traffic rules, how to take your bike on the train, bike rental options, which time of year to visit, where to go, and all that. Then there will be pieces linked to cycling, touring, bikepacking in Japan and more.

About me

I like hot weather, high mountains, long rides and cold beers. If these aren’t available then reading maps or being outdoors is good too.

I first came to Japan as a typical tourist on the classic Tokyo-Shinkansen-Kyoto trip and away from the crowds I saw roads in the hills that I wanted to ride on. So I came back and did just that and have since made short and long trips.

Friends would ask about riding in Japan, then others. If I was asking things and friends were too then probably others are too? Then I spent some autumn evenings learning about websites and here we are. We’ll see how things work out, at worst I’ll have spent a a few months honing my travel plans and route ideas. Hopefully it’ll be a useful resource for others looking to go cycling in Japan, for day trips, touring and bikepacking.
